KATIE MILLER is a multidisciplinary artist from the rolling valleys of Esterhazy, Saskatchewan and is passionate about living life in the present moment and connecting with people through her photography, writing and music. After pursuing her music as a singersongwriter and recording two albums to date, Katie now devotes most of her creative energy to her photography, along with writing a bit of poetry and keeps musically active in her community hosting various live music events.
Bringing People Together With Local Live Music✌️
I had a great time hosting and performing at an evening of local, live music in my hometown of Esterhazy on Saturday, Feb 12. I organized a line-up of a few local musicians which was held on stage at the Maple Leaf Theatre. It's hard to believe that the last time I had performed was at an Open Mic in January 2020, as I used to host these on a regular basis. I suppose that would explain why I was so nervous on Saturday! Nervous but also excited to be able to bring people together with live music.

Frosty Flour Mill
I am feeling blessed that my capture of the the Esterhazy Flour Mill on a beautiful hoarfrost day has connected with so many people. Thanks to Tourism Saskatchewan that shared this photo on their social media a couple of years ago, this photo reached thousands of people. There were countless comments and stories from people's past of the days when they would visit this flour mill or one just like it. Construction was completed in 1907, making it the oldest and most complete flour mill of heavy post and beam construction remaining in Saskatchewan. Like other mills of the period, wheat delivered here by local farmers would be processed into flour, bran and other products. The flour mill contains original turn-of-the-century milling equipment including grinders, sifter, bucket elevators and bagging machines, and is is attached to an elevator for storing grain. The grain elevator is of wood crib construction and has a sloped shoulder roofline. The Esterhazy flour mill stands as a reminder of the importance of flour mills in the development of Saskatchewan Grain Industry. Designated as a provincial heritage property in 2005, it also joined the family of national historic sites in 2007 with its designation as a National Historic Site of Canada.
One of my Instagram followers commented: "I remember riding around the flour mill on my bike with a banana seat as a kid. Can't believe it's still there. What a beautiful photo." I am grateful to have such a historic building in my hometown of Esterhazy and blessed to have this capture of it framed by the beauty of winter.
FLOWERS ON THE SUN is my favourite song on my album, A New Day, and was inspired by a note my son wrote when he was four years old, which consisted solely of those four words. I thought it was beautiful and called it his first poem. I saved the note and years later, I crafteded this song about nature, the environment, and how humankind must be proactive in protecting this beautiful planet for many generations to come.
